Update: Market Chatter: Meta Platforms' Smart Glasses Face France Probe Over Nonconsensual Filming
MT newswire2026/09/18 13:38 09:38 AM EDT, 09/18/2026 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Meta's response in the fifth paragraph.) Meta Platforms' (META) AI-enabled smart glasses are facing growing scrutiny in France, where Paris prosecutors have opened a criminal probe into suspected sexual harassment involving the devices, Reuters reported Friday. The probe follows complaints over a social media trend of using smart glasses to record women on the street without their consent and post the videos online, with prosecutors not specifying the brands involved, according to the report. France's data protection regulator has also received fewer than 10 complaints involving smart glasses used in workplaces, Reuters said. Meta said it has built privacy protections into its AI glasses and will continue strengthening safeguards as the devices become more capable, the report added. In a statement emailed to MT Newswires, a Meta spokesperson said the company will cooperate with authorities. Meta takes misuse of its glasses seriously, removes content promoting harassment, and has built privacy safeguards into the devices, including a light that indicates the device is recording, the spokesperson said.
