Ethereum continued to consolidate below $2500 on September 8th, rising to $2507.99 intraday before falling back to around $2475. Over the past few days, ETH has mostly fluctuated between $2450 and $2550, repeatedly crossing the middle of the range without establishing a sustained direction. Short-term trading remains range-bound. Looking at the 4-hour chart, the Bollinger Band middle line is around $2484.76, acting as the nearest resistance level. If the price reclaims this level, the market will have a chance to further test the upper Bollinger Band around $2516.64 and approach the $2540-$2550 resistance zone again. The nearest support level is around $2452.87, corresponding to the lower Bollinger Band. If ETH continues to fall but holds above this level, the overall trend remains range-bound; a clear break below $2450 could see the price further decline to $2400. The Average Directional Movement Index (ADX) has currently fallen to 11.1. This level typically indicates weak trend strength, consistent with the repetitive and unsustainable price action of ETH since the end of August. Macroeconomic Expectations Suppress Risk Assets The latest US employment data, stronger than market expectations, put pressure on risk assets, including Ethereum. The US added 162,000 jobs in August, significantly higher than the market's initial estimate of approximately 53,000, while the unemployment rate remained at 4.1%. Following the data release, market expectations for further tightening by the Federal Reserve at its September meeting intensified. Reuters, citing market pricing, reported that traders were at one point betting on a 60% probability of a September rate hike. When interest rate expectations rise, funds typically flow more towards low-risk assets such as government bonds, making more volatile crypto assets more susceptible to suppression. Meanwhile, rising international oil prices have also increased inflation concerns. Reuters reported that Brent crude oil rose to $98.66 per barrel on September 8th, influenced by the Middle East conflict. Next, US PPI and CPI data will become the new focus of market attention. Liquidation Zones Near Upper and Lower Boundaries CoinGlass's three-day liquidation heatmap shows a high concentration of liquidity around $2455, indicating a large number of leveraged long positions near the lower edge of the current range. A price drop below $2450 could trigger further long liquidations, amplifying the decline towards $2400. On the other hand, there is also a relatively close liquidity distribution around $2515 to $2520, while a larger liquidation zone is concentrated in the $2540 to $2550 area. This means that if ETH recovers $2500 and continues to rise, short covering could push the price to retest the upper edge of the range. In the past 24 hours, approximately $29 million in Ethereum futures positions have been liquidated, with open interest at approximately $33.3 billion. Overall, ETH is currently caught between two liquidity targets: $2450 represents short-term downside risk, while $2515 and $2550 are key upside levels to watch. $2400 remains a key support level. Some analysts believe that as long as ETH continues to hold above $2400, the larger upward structure remains intact. The current consolidation phase is more like accumulating liquidity within a range than a trend reversal. However, in the short term, ETH remains neutral. The latest decline kept ETH below the $2,500 psychological level, which has repeatedly limited recovery attempts since the start of September. Buyers briefly pushed the price to $2,500 during the latest 4-hour session, but the move lost strength before reaching the upper end of its recent range. Ethereum has largely traded between $2,450 and $2,550 since Sept. 3. Repeated moves through the middle of the range have failed to produce a sustained trend, leaving both breakout and breakdown attempts vulnerable to reversals. The middle band is the first level buyers need to recover before challenging the upper band at $2,516.64. A 4-hour close above $2,517 could improve the short-term setup and expose the $2,540–$2,550 resistance area. Ethereum has struggled to hold above that zone during recent recovery attempts, making it an important barrier for a larger breakout. The lower Bollinger Band rests at $2,452.87 and provides the nearest technical support. A move toward the lower band would keep ETH within its existing range, but a decisive close below it could open a drop toward $2,400. The Average Directional Index stands at 11.1 on the 4-hour chart. An ADX reading below 20 usually reflects a weak trend, consistent with the repeated reversals and limited follow-through visible since late August. The daily chart remains more constructive. Ethereum is trading above the Supertrend support at $2,318.72, while the Awesome Oscillator remains positive at 256.05. However, the oscillator’s shrinking bars show that bullish momentum has weakened since the August rally.
