Federal Reserve's Williams anticipates a rate cut later this year

Federal Reserve's Williams stated that officials do not need to further tighten policy, and reiterated his expectation that the central bank will cut interest rates later this year. Williams acknowledged that inflation has fallen from its highest point in decades, but officials hope to see inflation return to 2% and maintain at this level.

He expects the Federal Reserve will lower interest rates later this year, bringing them back to a more normal level. These remarks echo his recent comments, with several Fed officials including Chairman Powell explicitly stating in recent weeks that given the potential resilience of the economy and labor market as well as ongoing risks facing inflation outlooks, they believe there is no need for hasty rate cuts.
