ANALYSIS: Bitcoin ETF Inflows May Be Part of a Non-Directional Arbitrage Strategy, Not Necessarily a Bullish Bet
The spot bitcoin price continues to fluctuate in a narrow range despite record inflows into the U.S.-listed spot bitcoin ETF.ETF inflows appear to be part of a non-directional cash and arbitrage strategy, and do not necessarily represent outright bullish bets. CMS Holdings, an anonymous market observer, said on X: “Entities buy ETFs and sell CME futures to lower basis spreads in some of the major markets, thus allowing the entities to realize a net profit, which is why ETF inflows are high but spot is relatively unchanged.” This strategy, often referred to as cash arbitrage, is designed to profit from the premiums in the futures market relative to the spot market.
