The Federal Reserve, Bank of Japan and Bank of England will all announce key interest rate resolutions this week
Three major central banks, including the Federal Reserve, the Bank of Japan and the Bank of England, are set to hold policy meetings this week, with results expected to be at least as varied across the board. The Bank of Japan will be the first to announce a resolution on Wednesday, and analysts are currently split on whether the BOJ will raise its policy rate from the current 0%-0.1% or signal an imminent rate hike. The Federal Reserve will announce its interest rate resolution in the early hours of Thursday morning Beijing time. While almost no one thinks the Fed will start cutting rates immediately, almost everyone expects the Fed to indicate it will cut rates at its next meeting in mid-September. The Bank of England is due to announce its policy decision early Thursday afternoon, and economists and interest rate markets are roughly evenly split on whether the central bank will ease policy for the first time in several years. More definitively, even if the BoE does cut rates, it could signal that it is taking a very cautious approach, i.e., suggesting to markets that it should not expect a series of easing policies.
