FIFA 2026 World Cup blockchain ticketing system faces preliminary investigation
Foresight News reported, citing Bloomberg, that the Swiss gambling regulator Gespa has launched a preliminary investigation into a blockchain token sale backed by FIFA, which allows fans to exchange these tokens for tickets to the 2026 World Cup matches. Gespa, which also oversees lotteries and sports betting, is currently investigating whether FIFA is selling sports event tickets or providing gambling-like services. Manuel Richard, head of Gespa, told Bloomberg that the regulator needs to determine whether the global football governing body is complying with local regulations. Gespa can require Swiss companies that violate its rules to cease improper conduct. If a company operates purely online or is based abroad, Gespa can request Swiss internet service providers to block access to the company’s website.
FIFA, headquartered in Zurich, operates its FIFA Collect platform in partnership with blockchain software developer Modex Tech Ltd., which has offices in Switzerland, Gibraltar, and Italy. According to a person familiar with the matter, Modex has not yet been contacted by Gespa. A spokesperson for Modex did not respond to a request for comment.
