Tether launches peer-to-peer password manager PearPass to curb cloud breach risks

Tether has launched PearPass, a new password manager that stores credentials directly on users’ devices, which the firm says eliminates cloud-based storage and server vulnerabilities that have plagued traditional password managers for more than a decade.

The security tool, initially teased in June 2025, is built around device-level encryption and peer-to-peer synchronization, with no centralized infrastructure, according to a Wednesday announcement.

Tether said passwords never leave a user’s hardware except when shared across their own devices via encrypted P2P channels.

A response to rising breach concerns

Tether presented PearPass as a response to a string of high-profile cloud breaches and growing scrutiny of centralized password management platforms. Earlier this year, over 16 billion passwords to Apple, Facebook, Google, government services, and other social media platforms were leaked in what's believed to be the largest data breach ever, according to Forbes.

“Every major breach proves the same point: if your secrets live in the cloud, they’re not really yours,” said Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino.
The firm said its new product removes the “single point of failure” created by server-hosted vaults and instead gives users full control of their passwords, recovery keys, and syncing flows.

“No servers, no intermediaries, no back doors,” Ardoino added.

Instead of cloud services, the app uses end-to-end encryption and open-source cryptographic libraries, and has completed an independent security audit by Secfault Security, per the Dec. 17 announcement.

Tether claimed that PearPass functions even during outages or in high-risk environments because it has no cloud dependency.

Tether’s push into decentralized consumer tech

PearPass is the first fully open-source application in the Pears ecosystem — Tether’s new initiative developing decentralized, user-controlled software tools.

The stablecoin issuer said the launch is part of a long-term strategy to build technologies “resilient against future pressures of centralization,” positioning PearPass as a model for how authentication systems might evolve in more adversarial digital environments.

The app includes local-only storage, a password generator, peer-to-peer syncing, and key-based recovery. It will be available for free across major platforms.

Today’s password manager launch comes as Tether continues to expand far beyond USDT issuance.

Last week, Bloomberg reported that Tether is exploring liquidity corridors, including equity tokenization, for new investors as it eyes a $20 billion raise at a $500 billion valuation. Tether also recently led an $8 million investment round in Speed, a Lightning-based payments processor targeting real-time global settlements.

Valuation drops to a ten-year low! Jensen Huang calls Nvidia the "world's first growth-value stock", but investors don't seem convinced

Nvidia's price-to-earnings ratio has dropped below 17 times, which is only about half of its projected 2025 level. Although revenue and net profit for fiscal year 2027 are expected to grow by 90% and 99% respectively, the company's stock has risen only about 20% this year, significantly lagging behind the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index. Meanwhile, gross margin is expected to decline from 75% in the second quarter to below 72% in the fourth quarter. Rising memory costs and continued pressure from customers developing their own chips, as well as uncertainty over future AI capital expenditures, have become key factors for the market to reassess Nvidia's valuation.
