Euro Area Inflation Matches ECB Target in December
According to preliminary figures released by Eurostat on Wednesday, inflation across the euro area reached 2% in December. This outcome aligns with both economists’ forecasts, as surveyed by Reuters, and the European Central Bank’s official target. The previous month, inflation was slightly higher at 2.1%.
Core inflation—which strips out the more unpredictable costs of energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco—registered at 2.3% for the year ending in December, a modest decrease from November’s 2.4%. Meanwhile, inflation in the services sector eased to 3.4%, down from 3.5% the month before.
The ECB maintained its main deposit rate at 2% for the fourth straight meeting in December, continuing its current monetary policy stance.
