Building Permit Values Drop Sharply in November

Canada saw a significant decline in the total value of building permits issued in November, falling by $1.8 billion (a 13.1% decrease) to reach $12.0 billion. Both residential and non-residential sectors contributed to this downturn, with residential permits dropping by $1.0 billion and non-residential permits decreasing by $788.2 million.

When adjusted for inflation (2023=100), the value of building permits in November was 13.3% lower than in October and 3.9% below the level from a year earlier. Residential construction intentions in particular fell by $1.0 billion (a 12.0% decline) to $7.5 billion. Ontario was the main factor behind this drop, reversing the gains it had made in October with a decrease of $884.5 million.
