Yuan Surge Triggers Unprecedented $99.9B Foreign Exchange Sell-Off
Chinese Banks See Unprecedented Surge in Foreign Currency Sales
In December, Chinese banks experienced an all-time high in foreign currency sales for their clients, as optimism about a stronger yuan and typical year-end demand prompted a significant shift toward the domestic currency. According to data released Thursday by the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, domestic banks sold a net total of $99.9 billion in foreign exchange on behalf of their customers. This amount is over six times greater than the figure reported in November, highlighting a widespread move by both businesses and investors to benefit from the yuan’s anticipated appreciation. Notably, the yuan has outperformed all other Asian currencies in recent months.
