GBP/JPY climbs past 211.50 as expectations for a BoE rate reduction diminish
GBP/JPY Rebounds as Pound Strengthens Amid Economic Data
After three consecutive days of losses, the GBP/JPY currency pair finds stability near 211.70 during Monday's European session. The pair is buoyed by renewed strength in the Pound Sterling, following robust monthly GDP figures from the UK last week, which have led traders to scale back expectations for a Bank of England rate cut in February.
In November, the UK economy grew by 0.3% compared to the previous month, recovering from a 0.1% decline in October and surpassing forecasts of a 0.1% increase. Investors are now turning their attention to upcoming key UK releases this week, such as employment and consumer price index data, which could offer further clues about the Bank of England’s future policy direction.
However, gains in the GBP/JPY pair may be limited as the Japanese Yen finds support amid speculation of intervention by Japanese officials. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama has hinted at the possibility of joint action with the United States to bolster the Yen. On Friday, Katayama emphasized that all measures, including direct intervention in the currency markets, remain under consideration.
Japan’s industrial output dropped by 2.7% month-on-month in November 2025, a steeper fall than the preliminary estimate of 2.6%, reversing a 1.5% rise in October and marking the largest decline since January 2024.
The Yen is also underpinned by expectations that the Bank of Japan may raise interest rates. While the central bank is anticipated to keep its policy rate steady at 0.75% this week, market participants are watching for any signals of a potential rate hike in June. Last week, BoJ Governor Kazuo Ueda reaffirmed the bank’s readiness to increase rates if economic and inflation trends align with their projections.
