Bloomberg: Lack of regulation could "destroy" the future of the crypto industry

BlockBeats News, January 20, the Bloomberg Editorial Board published an article pointing out that although the U.S. Congress is trying to establish a legal framework for digital assets to encourage innovation while curbing illegal activities, these efforts are likely to be ineffective in the context of weakened regulatory authority and insufficient resources.

The article mentions that the stablecoin regulatory bill, the "Genius Act," disperses important responsibilities among multiple regulatory agencies, while a key department—the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC)—has been significantly "weakened" after layoffs and cyberattacks. Another bill, the "Clarity Act," could weaken the SEC's authority by placing most tokens under the jurisdiction of the CFTC, but the CFTC's budget is only one-sixth that of the SEC, and it also lacks sufficient personnel and enforcement capabilities.

Meanwhile, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), which was previously responsible for handling crypto-related consumer complaints, has been almost "dismantled," further weakening the regulatory system.

Bloomberg believes that if crypto assets are pushed toward broader public and institutional investors without adequate regulatory capacity, continued exposure of fraud and crime could backfire on the industry. The article calls for the establishment of a unified legal framework for trading all hard-to-classify digital assets (such as bitcoin and ethereum), with the SEC and CFTC jointly formulating rules to ensure market stability, investor protection, and information disclosure.

The commentary concludes with a warning that until Congress truly grants regulators sufficient authority, expertise, and resources, the crypto market will continue to face the real risk of "buyer beware."
