Yuan Pulls Back After Hitting 32-Month Peak

On Wednesday, the Chinese yuan slipped slightly against the US dollar, stepping back from its highest level in nearly three years. This movement followed an unexpected decision by the central bank to set a weaker daily reference rate. Market participants viewed the central bank’s choice to keep the yuan below the 7-per-dollar mark as a notable signal, especially since the currency has appreciated by 0.4% so far this year. In 2023, the yuan strengthened 4.5% against the dollar, marking its strongest annual gain since 2020.

Before trading began, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) established the midpoint at 7.0014 per dollar, which was 8 pips softer than the previous day and 436 pips below the Reuters forecast of 6.9578. The spot yuan’s value reflected this cautious stance from the central bank.
