Glonghui Jan 22|According to MacDailyNews, Apple has long been a key driving force behind TSMC's growth through its exclusive chip foundry partnership. However, with Nvidia's explosive growth in AI demand, this situation is now undergoing a dramatic shift. According to a recent report by Tim Culpan, TSMC CEO C.C. Wei told Apple during a senior executive visit in August 2025 that the iPhone maker would face significant price increases in the future and would no longer enjoy guaranteed priority access to wafer capacity at TSMC’s various factories. The market generally believes that in some quarters of 2025, driven by a surge in high-performance GPU orders due to the AI boom, Nvidia has surpassed Apple to become TSMC’s largest customer. Although Apple has a diversified and extensive product line that ensures its long-term importance to TSMC, in the short term, the balance of customer power has clearly shifted towards Nvidia, forcing Apple to compete more aggressively for advanced process capacity allocation.According to Culpan’s analysis and interviews with supply chain sources, Nvidia likely became TSMC’s largest customer in at least one or two quarters last year. In terms of product structure, Apple’s chip product line is broader and more diversified, while Nvidia’s products are highly concentrated in advanced processes with massive wafer demand. For this reason, Apple will remain an indispensable and important customer for TSMC for at least the next 10 years. However, in the short term, as TSMC’s technology roadmap advances and overall industry trends change, the market environment is more favorable for high-performance computing chip companies such as Nvidia and AMD, meaning that Apple will still need to continue “competing for” advanced process capacity over the next one to two years.
