EU-Mercosur trade agreement expected to take effect temporarily amid impending legal challenge
EU-Mercosur Trade Deal Set for Provisional Launch
According to an EU diplomat speaking with Reuters, the European Union’s historic free trade agreement with South American nations is on track to be implemented on a provisional basis as soon as March. Although a legal challenge could postpone its complete enforcement for several years, preparations for a partial rollout are moving forward.
This development raises both political and economic stakes for the EU’s most significant trade pact to date, especially as resistance to the agreement intensifies in certain parts of the bloc.
Provisional Measures Anticipated
An EU official explained that the EU-Mercosur agreement will begin to apply provisionally once any one of the Mercosur member states completes ratification. “That will likely happen soon,” the official noted.
