Will the RBA Choose a Swift Shift in Policy Direction?
Australia’s Core Inflation Surpasses Expectations
Recent inflation figures from Australia have heightened worries among central bankers and investors alike. The Reserve Bank of Australia’s preferred gauge of underlying inflation—the trimmed mean—climbed to 3.4% year-over-year in the fourth quarter. This result not only topped the anticipated 3.3%, but also pushed inflation above the RBA’s target range of 2% to 3%.
Quarterly core inflation matched predictions at 0.9%. Despite this, the uptick in the annual rate indicates that the path toward lower inflation may prove more challenging and persistent than previously hoped.
