South Korea sees highest-ever January exports driven by surge in AI chip demand
South Korea Achieves Record January Export Figures
South Korea reached an unprecedented milestone in January, recording its highest export numbers ever for that month, according to official figures released on Sunday, February 1. Driven by surging global demand for artificial intelligence technologies—which depend heavily on the nation’s semiconductor industry—exports soared to US$65.8 billion. This marks a substantial 33.9% increase compared to the same period last year and is the first time January exports have exceeded the US$60 billion mark.
As a global leader in memory chip production, South Korea plays a vital role in supporting AI infrastructure worldwide. Major technology companies such as Samsung and SK have also reported their best-ever quarterly operating profits, reflecting the sector’s robust performance.
