UK: Business confidence reaches its highest level in 17 months, driven by growth in output, new orders, and export business
UK Manufacturing Shows Strong Start in 2026
At the beginning of 2026, the UK's manufacturing industry experienced notable momentum, with both production and new order volumes increasing at a faster pace. Business confidence also climbed, reaching its highest point in nearly 18 months.
According to the latest seasonally adjusted S&P Global UK Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index™ (PMI®), the index reached 51.8 in January—a 17-month peak—rising from 50.6 in December and surpassing the preliminary estimate of 51.6. This marks the third month in a row that the PMI has indicated expansion in the sector.
Out of the five main components of the PMI, three—new orders, output, and suppliers' delivery times—reflected improvements in the overall business environment.
