ISM Manufacturing Climbs to Its Strongest Level Since 2022
Manufacturing Sector Shows Signs of Recovery
The ISM manufacturing index surged by 4.7 points, supporting our outlook for a gradual expansion in both capital investment and manufacturing output. However, some of this uptick may be attributed to companies restocking inventories at the end of the year due to ongoing trade uncertainties, which could be temporarily inflating the numbers.
Meanwhile, the prices component reached 59.0, which raises concerns about the ongoing struggle to control inflation. After spending ten consecutive months in contraction, the ISM manufacturing index has now returned to growth territory. January’s reading of 52.6 offers manufacturers a much-needed reprieve, even if some of the improvement may prove short-lived due to seasonal factors.
