TotalEnergies to Supply Solar Power to Google's Texas Data Center
French oil giant TotalEnergies signed two long-term agreements on Monday to supply solar power to Google's data centers in Texas, USA. This move is part of TotalEnergies' strategy to capitalize on the surge in electricity demand driven by the development of artificial intelligence.
TotalEnergies will supply power to Google from its two photovoltaic projects in Texas, with a total installed capacity of 1 gigawatt. Over the next 15 years, these two projects will provide Google with a total of 28 terawatt-hours of renewable electricity. Construction of the related projects is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of this year.
Among oil giants, TotalEnergies has taken a differentiated development path: while investing in gas power plants, the company continues to increase its investments in renewable energy and is expanding its power business in deregulated electricity markets. The price volatility in such markets can create significant trading opportunities, and the market under the jurisdiction of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is one such example.
Marc-Antoine Pignon, Vice President of Renewable Energies for TotalEnergies USA, stated that these two agreements represent the largest renewable power purchase agreements the company has signed in the United States.
In fact, TotalEnergies has previously supplied power to Google indirectly: the company holds a 50% stake in Clearway Energy, a California-based renewable energy firm, which recently signed a power supply agreement with a total installed capacity of 1.2 gigawatts to provide electricity to data centers in the three major U.S. power markets.
Will Conkling, Director of Clean Energy and Power at Google, stated in a release: “Our agreement with TotalEnergies will add necessary generation capacity to the local power system, further enhancing the total supply of economic and reliable electricity in the entire region.”
