Evaluating the Effects of U.S. Housing Affordability Initiatives
Housing Affordability Challenges in the U.S.
Although there have been some recent gains, the cost of owning a home in the United States is still much higher than what has been typical in the past. In an effort to address this issue, the federal government has recently introduced a series of new ideas aimed at making housing more affordable. Most of these initiatives have concentrated on helping buyers overcome obstacles to purchasing a home, while efforts to increase housing supply have played a secondary role. While it is still unclear exactly which proposals will be enacted, it is likely that several will advance in the coming months. The key question remains: will these measures create lasting improvements in affordability, or will they offer only temporary relief?
