(1) On Thursday, a merchant vessel was boarded by unidentified personnel while anchored approximately 38 nautical miles northeast of Fujairah Port, UAE. The vessel subsequently changed course toward neighboring waters, with its AIS signal completely interrupted, and is currently missing. (2) The ship involved has been identified as the Honduran-flagged fisheries research vessel "Huichuan," with the operator registered in the Marshall Islands. Vessel tracking data shows the last sighting was on May 12 near the waters of the Gulf of Oman. (3) The incident occurred adjacent to the global energy transportation chokepoint, the Strait of Hormuz, marking another interception of a merchant vessel in the region recently. The forced boarding and disappearance of the vessel while at anchor has reignited shipping industry concerns over safe passage in the Gulf. (4) If more vessels are subsequently forced to interrupt their routes or change course, the crude oil supply chain will face substantial "physical bottleneck" risks. With Gulf shipping insurance premiums already at elevated levels, this sudden disruption could catalyze supply anxiety in the energy market, rapidly driving up risk premiums in the short term.
