South Korean chemical company PKC has launched a project to expand the chlorine production capacity for semiconductors at its Gunsan plant, with capacity set to increase by 50%.
Annual production capacity will rise from the current 1,400–1,500 tons to 2,100–2,200 tons.
This investment, amounting to several tens of billions of won, was decided after prior consultation with Samsung Electronics.
The expansion is driven by surging demand for etching gases required for high-density NAND flash memory stacking, as well as Samsung Electronics' request to increase hydrogen chloride supply. Hydrogen chloride is commonly used in semiconductor wafer cleaning and etching processes, and is produced by reacting chlorine with hydrogen.
