Rio Tinto launches $1.5 billion low-carbon aluminum smelter expansion project in Quebec

Glonghui June 1st｜The $1.5 billion low-carbon aluminum smelter expansion project by Rio Tinto, located in Quebec, Canada, has begun trial operations. The mining giant expects the project will be commissioned by the end of this year, at which point all 96 new electrolytic cells in the Arvida complex will be fully operational. This will increase the plant’s annual primary aluminum production capacity by about 160,000 tons, bringing the total primary aluminum capacity using low-carbon AP60 electrolytic technology to 220,000 tons.
