LG Chem announced plans to invest KRW 15 trillion (approximately $9.74 billion) in research and development by 2035, aiming to cultivate new growth drivers in emerging fields such as semiconductors, mobility, robotics materials, and anticancer drugs.
LG Chem CEO Kim Dong-chun unveiled the plan at a staff meeting on Monday. This move aims to diversify the company's business, lessen its reliance on traditional petrochemicals, and expand into high value-added sectors.
He stated, "We will upgrade our business portfolio by focusing on developing core future growth businesses such as semiconductors, mobility and robotics materials, and anticancer drugs."
Of the total investment, LG Chem plans to allocate 70% to semiconductors, mobility, and robotics materials, while also concentrating on acquiring leading-edge technologies and developing new applications based on artificial intelligence.
The company will focus on advanced packaging materials in the semiconductor sector and expand its mobility and robotics materials business into areas such as structural materials for robots, precision drive materials, and adhesive materials.
For its anticancer drug business, LG Chem plans to strengthen its research pipeline through global clinical trials and strategic partnerships.
