- The German central bank completed an additional issuance of 3.807 billion euros in two-year Schatz bonds on Tuesday, with an average winning yield of 2.57%, lower than the previous auction's 2.59%. This continues the gentle downward trend in short-term rates amid volatility in European Central Bank policy expectations.
- The bid-to-cover ratio rose from 1.6 to 1.9, indicating improved market demand for German short-term government bonds. Investors' preference for eurozone top-rated sovereign bonds as safe havens remains steady amid ongoing disturbances to the global trade outlook caused by Trump's tariff rhetoric.
- While the auction yield saw a slight decline, the subscription ratio increased noticeably. This reflects that, during a phase when the market still has differing views on the future rate path of the European Central Bank, short-duration instruments are favored by primary market participants due to their lower interest rate sensitivity and higher liquidity premium.
- Attention now turns to whether eurozone inflation data can provide further guidance for short-term yields, and whether the German federal government's debt management strategy will adjust the issuance pace in the second half of the year, potentially impacting the price discovery function of two-year bonds at the front end of the yield curve.
