The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) issued an emergency order on Tuesday authorizing power plants in the PJM Interconnection LLC region to operate at maximum capacity and allowing them to exceed certain environmental requirements. The PJM grid covers 13 states and provides electricity to 67 million people. The DOE's second order authorizes the PJM region to "activate backup generators as a last resort." PJM stated that both orders are effective until 11:59 p.m. New York time on July 3.
