Germany set to boost cryptocurrency trading through local banks
Germany’s two largest banking networks are building out cryptocurrency trading platforms that will let customers buy and sell digital assets through the apps and platforms they already use for their regular bank accounts.
The Sparkassen and DZ Bank playbook
The Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, the sprawling network of Germany’s public savings banks, is planning to enable Bitcoin and Ether trading for roughly 50 million retail customers. The service will run through DekaBank’s securities platform and existing mobile banking apps, with a target launch of summer 2026.
Then there’s DZ Bank, the country’s second-largest lender and the central institution for Germany’s cooperative banking sector. DZ Bank has already secured authorization from BaFin, Germany’s Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework. Its platform, named “meinKrypto,” is targeting a launch by the end of 2025.
Both banking networks have tapped Boerse Stuttgart Digital to provide liquidity and infrastructure support. DekaBank itself rolled out institutional crypto trading and custody services earlier in 2025, before opening the doors to retail.
Why MiCA is the real story
DZ Bank’s MiCA authorization from BaFin, secured in late December 2025, is a concrete example of the regulatory shift underway. This isn’t a bank experimenting with crypto in a regulatory gray zone. It’s a bank that went through a formal licensing process with Germany’s top financial regulator and got the green light.
A September 2025 survey found that 71% of cooperative banks expressed interest in offering crypto services to private clients. That’s up from 54% the year prior.
What this means for the broader crypto market
When you remove friction from accessing an asset class, participation increases. Germany is the largest economy in Europe and the fourth largest globally. If a meaningful fraction of those 50 million Sparkassen customers decide to allocate even a small amount to Bitcoin or Ether, the aggregate capital inflow would be substantial.
Once DZ Bank and the Sparkassen network go live, every other European bank will face a simple question from their retail customers: why can’t I do this here? MiCA applies across the entire EU, which means the regulatory framework is already in place for banks in France, Italy, Spain, and elsewhere to follow Germany’s lead.

Apple Pre-sale Tracker: iPhone 18 Pro Series Shows Weak Overseas Demand Signals, Duo Review Positive but Hardware Lags Behind
According to a survey by Jefferies, after the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro, delivery wait times in the four major markets—the US, UK, Germany, and Japan—have shortened by 5 to 11 days compared to last year, with no wait time in the US. Given stable production capacity, this is a clear sign of weak demand. Although the China and Hong Kong markets have performed better against the trend, there are still suspicions of speculative stockpiling. The new foldable Duo has been praised for its software experience, but its $2,000 price tag comes with a 254-gram body and dual-camera setup, leaving its hardware lagging significantly behind Android competitors. Jefferies maintains an "underperform" rating, with a target price implying a 21% downside from the current level.
