ECB Executive Panetta: Economic Outlook Fragile, Inflation and Growth Risks Persist
On July 7, ECB Executive Board member Panetta stated that despite the U.S. and Iran nearing a lasting peace agreement, the European Central Bank is still grappling with an uncertain economic situation. Speaking at a conference in Rome, Panetta noted that while the U.S.-Iran negotiations might lead to energy prices falling below the ECB's June forecast, the "outlook remains fragile." He remarked, "The risks of rising inflation and declining growth continue to coexist. This necessitates ongoing monitoring of geopolitical developments, energy markets, supply chains, wages, and inflation expectations. It also requires monetary policy to avoid committing to a predetermined path." Panetta further indicated that the current conflict is one of a series of increasingly frequent supply shocks, which may alter how policymakers respond in the future to ensure that inflation reaches the 2% target in the medium term.
