A regulatory filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) shows that Totoki sold 225,000 shares of SONY stock worth $4.7 million on July 3, cutting his holding of company stock in half. The stock sale occurred two days after Sony announced plans to retire physical game discs in its PlayStation video game console by 2028, pivoting to a digital download format.
Sony is also pushing into cryptocurrencies with plans to establish a national trust bank to issue dollar-denominated stablecoins. It’s not clear if the CEO’s stock sales are tied to the shifting business ventures at Sony. However, following his latest sales, Totoki continues to own 173,250 shares of SONY stock worth $3.6 million based on the current share price.
Sony’s Struggles and Reinvention
SONY stock has struggled for decades. The Japanese conglomerates share price hit an all-time closing high of $30.63 26 years ago. The stock briefly neared those peaks in November 2025, when it closed at $30.26, but has since fallen back to trade at $20.70 on July 15.
As a company, Sony is trying to reinvent itself amid slowing sales of its PlayStation video games and other electronic devices. Management has taken a page from video game retailer GameStop (GME), which has pivoted to become a multibillion-dollar holding company. Sony announced last week that it plans to focus on cryptocurrencies and stablecoins in the U.S.
Sony has received conditional approval from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to establish a national trust bank, through which it plans to issue U.S. dollar-denominated stablecoins.
Is SONY Stock a Buy?
Sony stock has a consensus Moderate Buy rating among three analysts. That rating is based on two Buy and one Hold recommendations issued in the last three months. The average SONY price target of $28.33 implies 37% upside from current levels.
