- According to data from the Spanish National Statistics Institute, in 2024, approximately 24% of jobs nationwide depend on the export of goods and services, involving about 5.2 million people. This proportion is basically unchanged from the previous year but represents a significant increase of about 35% compared to a decade ago, highlighting the continuously rising importance of foreign trade for the Spanish labor market.
- In terms of industry distribution, the trade, transportation, and hotel & catering sectors absorb the most export-related employment, totaling 2 million people. Manufacturing follows closely, providing about 1.1 million positions. Together, these two sectors account for roughly 60% of export-related employment.
- In terms of the impact of export destinations on domestic employment, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom rank as the top three, collectively associated with around 2 million jobs, reflecting the high degree of connection between the Spanish economy and core European markets.
- Regarding value added, about 72% of the value of Spain’s export goods and services is created domestically, with the remaining 28% coming from abroad. This share is slightly higher than in 2023. The total domestic value added related to exports is approximately 342.3 billion euros, accounting for 21.5% of GDP, a slight decrease from the previous year.
- Manufacturing remains the department with the largest contribution to domestic value added, at about 149 billion euros. Trade, transportation, and hotel & catering total approximately 107.1 billion euros, and the information and communications sector about 25.9 billion euros, while real estate and construction contribute the least.
- By country, exports to France bring the highest value added to the Spanish economy, about 45.8 billion euros, accounting for 2.9% of GDP. Germany, the United Kingdom, and Portugal follow closely, indicating that the value chain of Spain’s foreign trade remains highly concentrated in the European region.
