According to Indian government data, crude oil imports in June reached approximately 19.59 million tons, a decrease of over 12% compared to May and around 3.5% year-on-year, mainly due to seasonal refinery maintenance and high international oil prices dampening purchasing enthusiasm.
As for refined oil imports, the total in June was about 2.66 million tons, nearly 5% lower than the previous month and a significant year-on-year decrease of about 35%. Of this, liquefied petroleum gas imports dropped from 1.15 million tons in May to 1.03 million tons, and fuel oil imports shrank to around 20 thousand tons month-on-month, a notable decline from 540 thousand tons in the same period last year.
Total refined oil exports amounted to roughly 3.83 million tons, down more than 28% year-on-year, with all major product categories experiencing varying degrees of contraction. Aviation kerosene exports fell by over 38% year-on-year to about 410 thousand tons, while gasoline and diesel exports fell by approximately 23.6% and over 40%, respectively, compared to the same period last year.
In terms of domestic fuel consumption, total demand in June declined about 3.7% compared to May, reaching 19.42 million tons. This reflects the combined effect of seasonal factors and a slowdown in industrial activity on energy demand. All the above import and export figures are preliminary because data submitted by private refineries is discretionary and may be subject to subsequent revisions.
