Interactive Brokers released a strong financial report for Q2 2026 after the market closed on Tuesday. Driven by continued active customer trading, substantial growth in margin loans, and steady increases in net interest income, the company's revenue and profit both exceeded Wall Street expectations.

According to Zhitong Finance APP, US online brokerage Interactive Brokers (IBKR.US) released a robust financial report for the second quarter of 2026 after market close on Tuesday. Thanks to consistently active client trading activity, significant expansion in margin loans, and steady growth in net interest income, the company's both revenue and profit surpassed Wall Street expectations.

In the second quarter, the US stock market was dominated by AI-driven profit growth expectations amid geopolitical uncertainties. Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq recorded strong gains, and market volatility remained at high levels, creating a highly favorable operating environment for brokerages. Not only did Interactive Brokers perform excellently, but industry giant Charles Schwab (SCHW.US) also posted record-high quarterly profits during the same period.

The report shows that Interactive Brokers' net revenue for the second quarter reached approximately $1.9 billion, marking a significant 28% increase from $1.48 billion in the same period last year and well above the market consensus estimate of $1.79 billion. Adjusted diluted earnings per share were $0.69, higher than $0.51 in the same period last year and notably surpassing analysts' expectations of $0.64. Net profit attributable to common shareholders was $312 million, up from $224 million the previous year.

Dual Engines: Trading and Interest Income

All core revenue streams demonstrated rapid expansion. Commission income increased by 30% year-over-year to $673 million, mainly driven by broad-based growth in client trading volumes across major asset classes. Specifically, options contract trading volume increased by 17% year-over-year, equities trading volume rose by 14%, and futures trading volume slightly increased by 2%. As a key indicator of brokerage activity, daily average revenue trades (DARTs) surged by 36% to 4.82 million in the quarter, clearly reflecting high participation from both retail and institutional investors amid ongoing market volatility.

Net interest income, amid lagged effects of rate hikes and growing client leverage demand, climbed 23% year-over-year to $1.06 billion. The main driver was the significant increase in the average size of client margin loans and credit account balances. Data shows the ending client margin loan balance soared by 67% year-over-year to $108.5 billion, while client credit account balances grew by 27% to $182.4 billion.

Other fees and service income also recorded rapid growth of 40%, reaching $87 million, with notable contributions from payment for order flow and risk exposure fees. Execution, clearing, and distribution fee income rose 22% year-over-year to $142 million. The company's pre-tax profit margin for the quarter further expanded to 77%, up from 75% in the same period last year.

Regarding client base and assets under custody, Interactive Brokers continued its strong growth trajectory. The number of global client accounts increased by 34% year-over-year to 5.19 million. Client assets grew significantly by 40% to $930.3 billion.

On shareholder returns, the Interactive Brokers board of directors announced a quarterly cash dividend of $0.0875 per share, unchanged from the previous quarter.

After the earnings release, Interactive Brokers' shares rose more than 3% in after-hours trading on Tuesday, but as of press time, those gains had been fully erased and the stock is currently down about 0.7%.
