The Red Sea chokepoint is once again under blockade, putting Saudi Arabia's energy export lifeline at serious risk

  1. Since the large-scale blockage of the Strait of Hormuz due to military conflict on February 28, the Yanbu export hub on the west coast of Saudi Arabia has become the country’s main alternative channel for crude oil exports, with the port relying on the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait as a key transport node.
  2. This initial seemingly successful bypass is now in jeopardy, as Iranian-backed Houthi forces have announced a blockade on Saudi vessels attempting to navigate the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, directly threatening the security of Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea export route.
  3. The Bab-el-Mandeb Strait is a strategic chokepoint connecting the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean; if transit here is obstructed, Saudi Arabia will face the extreme situation of simultaneous restrictions on both its eastern and western export routes, further amplifying the vulnerability of the global energy supply chain.
  4. For an already tight energy market, this could be yet another intolerable shock; if the Red Sea route is forced to close, the interregional allocation of crude oil and refined products will be severely hampered, and oil price risk premiums will face another round of repricing.
