Apple is placing privacy protection at the core of its smart glasses strategy to differentiate itself from competitors and address consumer concerns regarding AI-powered wearable devices equipped with cameras.

According to Smart Finance APP, reports indicate that Apple (AAPL.US) is placing privacy protection at the core of its smart glasses strategy, distinguishing itself from competitors and addressing consumer concerns over AI-driven wearables equipped with cameras.

Apple previously postponed the launch of its smart glasses in part because the company wanted to further refine the product's design and related privacy policies. Currently, Apple plans to unveil the product for the first time at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June next year and is expected to make it available to consumers as early as the end of 2027.

Apple is developing a range of protective measures to reassure consumers that its smart glasses will not infringe on their personal privacy. Potential measures include greater reliance on on-device AI processing, avoiding facial recognition technology, restricting continuous environmental analysis, and not using user-recorded content to train AI models. Reportedly, the company is also testing additional privacy protection features at both the hardware and software levels.

This effort comes at a time when smart glasses equipped with cameras are receiving growing attention and scrutiny. Some courts, schools, hospitals, and other public places have already restricted the use of such devices due to concerns that users could record without others' knowledge.

For investors, Apple's emphasis on privacy reflects a key challenge facing the emerging smart glasses market. Although this field is expected to become a major growth area in the consumer electronics industry, large-scale adoption may depend not only on hardware and AI capabilities but also on public trust and the regulatory environment.

Apple's strategy contrasts with the criticism faced by Meta Platforms (META.US). Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses have helped advance this product category but have also sparked privacy concerns. According to reports, Apple considers protecting user privacy to be the highest priority and believes robust privacy safeguards will be key to widespread consumer acceptance of smart glasses.

Apple has also explored other design options, including versions without cameras or models where cameras support AI functions but are prohibited from capturing photos and videos. However, these alternatives are reportedly considered less attractive as they remove one of the most popular features of smart glasses—hands-free photo and video capture. Apple is expected to position privacy protection as an important competitive differentiator at the official product launch, seeking to continue its long-standing brand image of prioritizing user data security.
