- The Bank of Japan is expected to keep interest rates unchanged at 1% at its meeting on July 30-31, but will leave room for further rate hikes through a hawkish stance. Currently, Japan is facing intensifying inflationary pressures due to the Middle East war, yen weakness, and strong global AI demand. The central bank is still assessing the extent to which surging energy prices are being transmitted to the broader economy, so the pace and timing of rate hikes may remain ambiguous.
- According to sources, the central bank’s quarterly report may raise its economic growth forecast for fiscal year 2026, while slightly lowering its inflation estimate (due to the impact of subsidy policies and oil prices falling back from April). However, it will still warn that inflation could exceed the 2% target. Governor Kazuo Ueda faces a dilemma: on one hand, he needs to suppress yen short bets with a hawkish stance; on the other, he must avoid angering the government, which criticizes further tightening.
- The case for rate hikes is strengthening—hawkish members of the Policy Board are calling for faster rate increases, the Tankan survey shows corporate inflation expectations at a record high, and the yen has fallen to a 40-year low against the US dollar this month. Analysts expect the Bank of Japan to raise rates to 1.25% by the end of December, with the earliest move possible in October. Consumer inflation data in the coming months will be key in determining the timing of rate hikes.
