AstraZeneca (AZN.US) Q2 Earnings Beat Expectations, Market Focuses on Next-Generation Oncology Drug Development
British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca (AZN.US) reported second-quarter earnings that exceeded expectations.
According to Zhitong Finance APP, driven by strong sales of blockbuster anti-cancer drugs, UK pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca (AZN.US) reported second quarter earnings that exceeded expectations, while the market’s attention has now shifted to the company’s next-generation oncology pipeline.
On Monday, AstraZeneca announced that, at constant exchange rates, second quarter revenue grew by 5% to $15.38 billion, compared to market expectations of $15.39 billion. Adjusted earnings per share rose 18% to $2.63, beating the market consensus of $2.48. Sales of the breast cancer drug Enhertu surged significantly.
This UK-based pharmaceutical company is known for its strong presence in the cancer medication field, having launched several blockbuster drugs including Tagrisso and Imfinzi. However, investors are now more concerned about whether the company can sustain this success, as several key clinical trial results are set to be disclosed in the second half of this year.
AstraZeneca still expects core earnings per share to achieve low double-digit year-on-year growth by 2026, with total revenue growth in the mid-to-high single digits. For 2025, revenue and profit are expected to grow approximately 8% and 11% year-on-year, respectively.
Since the beginning of this year, AstraZeneca’s share price has fallen by 8%, triggered by clinical data for its cardiovascular drug Wainua falling short of expectations. Previously, company management had signaled optimism regarding the drug’s outlook, but the ultimate failure in clinical trials deeply disappointed the market. AstraZeneca has long been known for its high-standard clinical trial system, and late-stage failures for new drugs are extremely rare. This setback has also significantly impacted market confidence.
