Here is what investors will be looking for when Meta Platforms reports its earnings after markets close today:
-- One big question is whether Meta will increase its capital expenditure estimate for the year, like Alphabet did last week.
-- Then there's Meta's latest venture into a potential cloud-computing business. Observers are eagerly watching for hints that the company has attracted customers to support its bet on data-center expansion. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that BlackRock is leading $12 billion in financing for new Meta data centers in Texas.
-- Analysts are also expecting Meta to join companies like Alphabet and Tesla in negative free cash flow territory as they push further into artificial intelligence. Analysts polled by FactSet project that Meta will report free cash flow of negative $801 million for the second quarter.
-- Shares in the parent company of social platforms Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram have suffered losses in the run-up to earnings. Meta shares hit their longest losing streak on record yesterday, after the stock fell for nine consecutive trading days. Meta shares are down 13% during that period.
