Senator Blumenthal renews criticism of crypto, warns of rising scams ahead of midterms

Senator Richard Blumenthal has stepped up his criticism of the cryptocurrency sector, highlighting concerns over digital assets and their potential use in illicit activities ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

Lawmakers voice concerns over crypto scams

On Thursday, the Connecticut Democrat took to X to express his skepticism, naming cryptocurrency as “the currency of choice for crooks.” His comments followed a Senate forum where Lori Flowers, a pharmaceutical account executive, recounted her experience as the victim of a multimillion-dollar romance scam in 2022.

Flowers told the forum that perpetrators were able to move her stolen funds swiftly and irreversibly using cryptocurrency. Blumenthal referenced her testimony, using the case to emphasize the growing threat posed by crypto-related fraud.

He organized the Capitol Hill event earlier in the week, pointing out that the expanding use of digital assets makes money laundering and scams easier to carry out and harder to trace or recover.

Blumenthal raised alarm on proposals being considered in the Senate, stating that new legislation such as the CLARITY Act could undermine enforcement capabilities by restricting the authority of state attorneys general to pursue crypto crimes.

Resistance to the CLARITY Act intensifies

Blumenthal opposes the Republican-supported CLARITY Act, a bill designed to create clear regulations for digital assets. He has repeatedly criticized the measure, describing its ethics safeguards as insufficient and arguing that it could weaken existing protections against crypto-related fraud.

His stance is shared by several Senate Democrats, including influential voices like Elizabeth Warren, who serves as the Ranking Member of the Senate Banking Committee. Warren has labeled the latest version of the CLARITY Act “riddled with massive loopholes,” emphasizing what she sees as an urgent need for more robust oversight.

Senator Chris Van Hollen and Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester have also voiced objections, highlighting the bill’s perceived failure to adequately protect consumers from financial harm.

Elizabeth Warren and other senators argue that, without stronger enforcement mechanisms, the bill could leave the door open for escalating abuse in digital asset markets.

Progressive lawmakers increase scrutiny ahead of elections

Progressive leaders have stepped up their rhetoric against the cryptocurrency industry as political tensions rise heading into the midterms. Senator Bernie Sanders has pledged to challenge both the crypto and artificial intelligence sectors, making it a focus of campaign events in Minnesota.

Warren continues to spotlight the rising influence of crypto-focused political action committees (PACs) in federal races, expressing concerns about their growing involvement in campaign financing.

Groups like Fairshake and its affiliates are now counted among the largest financial contributors in American politics. Their activity reflects cryptocurrency’s increasing presence in both the regulatory and political arenas, heightening discussions about the need for stricter oversight.
