According to Bloomberg, the IRS Criminal Investigation division has warned that scammers are impersonating the IRS by using forged letters to steal crypto wallet assets and identity information. The scam letters include a QR code that directs recipients to a fake website, where they are told to register for a non-existent "Digital Asset Compliance Portal" and enter personal information before a given deadline. Jarod Koopman, head of IRS Criminal Investigation, stated that criminals are exploiting public trust in government agencies to carry out these scams. The infrastructure for this scam campaign was set up just days before the letters were sent, with the domain registered via a Hong Kong registrar and the fake website hosted on a network in Romania.
