- Data from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry on Friday shows that crude oil imports in June rose to approximately 2.1 million barrels per day, a year-on-year increase of about 6%, marking the first growth in four months. This rebound was mainly driven by a significant increase in purchases from the United States, offsetting a decline in supply from the Middle East.
- Imports from the Middle East plummeted by about 32% that month, with the two major suppliers, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, decreasing by around 27% and 31% respectively. In April and May, these two countries had already posted substantial drops of roughly 68% and 50% respectively.
- Meanwhile, crude oil imports from the United States surged by more than 70 times year-on-year, reaching nearly 680,000 barrels per day and accounting for about 32% of Japan's total imports from the US. Japan also imported approximately 40,000 barrels per day from Ecuador and about 25,000 barrels per day from Russia.
- In 2025, Japan is expected to rely on the Middle East for about 94% of its crude oil, but in June this year the proportion had already fallen to around 62%, marking the ninth consecutive month of year-on-year decline. This signals Japan's ongoing acceleration of its efforts to diversify energy imports.
- In terms of domestic refined oil sales, total sales in June fell by about 8% year-on-year to approximately 2.02 million barrels per day. Gasoline sales declined by about 7%, while kerosene sales fell by roughly 15%. Refinery throughput increased by about 5% year-on-year. By the end of the month, crude oil inventories stood at around 69.4 million barrels, up about 8% from the previous month but down roughly 8% year-on-year.
