- Pakistani Defense Minister Asif said in a Bloomberg interview on Tuesday that the United States and Iran are close to reaching “some sort of arrangement,” marking another positive official signal following earlier reports from the Gulf.
- Asif stated that the situation is once again moving towards a favorable peace arrangement or agreement, adding that signals from the past two to three days indicate both sides are getting closer.
- As a senior official from a neighboring country with close ties to Iran, Asif’s public remarks have added credibility to the news, further boosting market expectations for easing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
- Together with Iran’s foreign minister’s tough remarks earlier, the current news presents a situation where “official conciliatory tone” and “Iran’s principled stance” coexist. The geopolitical narrative is not yet fully aligned, but the marginal trend leans towards easing.
- Such statements may trigger further short covering, especially given that crude oil and safe-haven assets have already priced in some geopolitical risks. Correction of the expectation gap may lead to short-term volatility.
- The key point for verification going forward is whether the United States will respond and whether there is any substantive follow-up contact between the two sides. Verbal signals alone are not enough to sustain the compression of geopolitical premium.
