Market Chatter: Tesla's Internal Engineering Platforms May be Accessed by Court-Appointed Expert in Australia Class Action Lawsuit

07:05 AM EDT, 09/01/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Tesla's (TSLA) internal engineering platforms may be accessed by an independent expert after an Australian judge said he is considering the move, Reuters reported Tuesday. Federal Court judge Tom Thawley suggested appointing an independent expert as complainants claimed that the documents Tesla turned over in connection to a class-action lawsuit failed to capture crucial technical information necessary for the case, the report said. The lawsuit alleged Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y have "phantom braking" issues and the company also allegedly overstated the cars' self-driving capabilities and battery range, the report said. Thawley said giving access to a court-appointed expert would make the discovery process faster and cheaper, the report said. Tesla's attorney said they would think about the suggestion, but added that the company's systems were confidential, the report said. The case is scheduled to return to court on Nov. 12, Reuters said. Tesla did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
