South Korea's state-owned power company Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) is in talks with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix on a large-scale advance electricity payment plan, aiming to raise funds for the construction of power grid infrastructure needed for a new semiconductor industry cluster.
According to the current plan, Samsung Electronics is expected to prepay 20 trillion won and SK Hynix 5 trillion won, totaling 25 trillion won, which is roughly equal to the combined electricity bills of the two companies for the next five years.
In a statement, KEPCO said that this mechanism is designed to simultaneously meet both the companies' urgent need for grid expansion and the power company's need for investment funds; the specific prepaid amounts and the period covered have not yet been finalized.
