Trump Signs Orders to Ban Some Canadian Products From U.S. Market
President Trump signed orders to ban the importation of many dairy products, alcoholic beverages and motorcycles from Canada in three weeks-a retaliation for Canadian tariffs that took effect earlier the same day.
Trump also modified the scope of some existing 50% tariffs on Canada, removing levies on cement, road salt and some hospital products, while imposing 50% levies on other products including some all-terrain vehicles, boats and cheeses.
The tariff changes will take effect Sept. 15, according to proclamations posted on the White House website, while the trade prohibitions are set to kick in on Sept. 29.
The overall economic impact of the trade moves would initially be small. A senior Trump administration official said the new trade prohibitions would only affect a dollar volume of trade in the "single-digit billions," while the overall volume of Canadian exports affected by the tariffs-$20 billion-would be unchanged after the modifications.

Transcontinental Reports Quarterly Miss, Soft Volume Outlook
Transcontinental missed third-quarter earnings expectations and said it expects a flat full-year outlook amid shrinking traditional print volumes.
Shares gained 0.6% to settle at C$5.27.
The commercial printing company said it expects lower volume this year, including in its book printing business, which just a year earlier experienced high growth.
The company also said that it expects adjusted operating earnings before depreciation and amortization from continuing operations to remain unchanged from the prior year.
Canada Scales Back Regulatory Reviews of Energy Projects
Canada says proposed oil-and-gas pipelines, natural-gas plants and electricity-transmission lines would no longer be subject to a second assessment under a scheme introduced by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Those potential projects, among others, would still be subject to scrutiny from the main federal energy regulator. The Canada Energy Regulator, officials said, takes into account a project's impact on the environment and health, and ensures the proponent is respecting the rights of affected indigenous communities.
The decision was published in the government's official newspaper, the Canada Gazette, and reflects the latest effort by Prime Minister Mark Carney to reduce delays in the project-approval process and create a regulatory system in which projects face a single review on a time-limited basis.
WELL Health Technologies Appoints Evelyn Sutherland as CFO

WELL Health said that she has worked across a number of industries, including retail, consumer services, utilities and real estate, most recently as CFO of Staples Canada. She also served on the board Andlauer Healthcare Group until the company was acquired by UPS in 2025.
Xanadu Quantum Technologies Partners with ASML on Advanced Lithography for Photonic Quantum Chips
Xanadu Quantum Technologies is partnering with ASML to develop advanced lithography processes for Xanadu's photonic quantum hardware.
Xanadu, a Canadian photonic quantum computing company, on Wednesday said that the collaboration will focus on reducing line edge roughness, or LER, a critical manufacturing hurdle in photolithography that causes optical signal loss.
Reducing optical loss is critical for bringing photonic quantum hardware to fault-tolerant, error-corrected scale.
"Collaborating with ASML gives Xanadu the opportunity to explore advanced, industry-leading lithography processes that will support the continued development of our photonic quantum hardware," Xanadu Chief Executive Christian Weedbrook said.
North West Shares Advance on Sales Beat, Profit Rise
North West reported better than expected sales, driving profit higher in the second quarter.
Shares added 7.8% to settle at C$52.95.
North West, a grocer which focuses remote, rural, and northern communities, reported a 5.4% rise in second-quarter sales to C$682 million. This topped expectations of a more modest rise to C$661 million, according to a poll on FactSet.
The company cited strong same-store sales gains of 6.7%, as well as the positive impact of foreign exchange in its international operations. Last year, same-store sales were negatively affected by wildfire-related community evacuations in northern Canada.
Net earnings edged 1.9% higher to C$38.3 million, which on a per-share basis was a rise to C$0.76 from C$0.74 last year.

Canadian Whisky on the Rocks? Crown Royal is Set to Avoid Trump's New Ban.
By Victor Reklaitis for MarketWatch
Fans of Crown Royal probably don't need to start searching for alternatives.
President Trump has rolled out a plan to ban a wide range of Canadian alcoholic drinks in the U.S. - but the plan's details include a workaround for the top-selling Canadian whisky.
While Canadian-produced spirits, wine and beer are slated to get hit with the ban beginning Sept. 29, Canadian whiskies can avoid it if they're crossing the border in a container that's larger than 4 liters, or about 1 gallon.
Diageo's Crown Royal product is doing exactly that. It's distilled and matured in the Canadian province of Manitoba, but then shipped in large containers to bottling facilities in the U.S. for distribution to American customers.
Last year, Diageo drew flak in Canada for closing a bottling facility for Crown Royal in Ontario. The alcoholic-beverage giant said it was "part of an ongoing commitment to increase the efficiency and resiliency of its manufacturing footprint." Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded to that closure announcement a year ago by pouring out a bottle of Crown Royal during a news conference.
About five months ago, Diageo touted the official opening of a new facility in Alabama, saying the move was about "bringing the company's iconic beverage alcohol brands closer to customers."
In the rollout of its ban for Canadian alcoholic products on Tuesday, the Trump administration said whiskies that aren't Irish and Scotch whiskies and not elsewhere specified will be excluded from importation into the U.S. if they are "in containers each holding not over 4 liters." In other words, Canadian whiskies in containers larger than 4 liters won't get banned from the American market.
Crown Royal is by far the top-selling Canadian whisky brand, according to the Beverage Information Group, with a market share well ahead of other brands such as Canadian Club, Canadian Mist and Black Velvet.
Crown Royal was created by Sam Bronfman and his Seagram Co. in 1939 to mark a royal tour of Canada by the U.K.'s King George VI. Bronfman became one of Canada's richest men initially by exporting alcoholic products to the U.S. during the Prohibition era, relying on bootleggers and middle men. The Seagram empire eventually was dismantled and sold off, with Diageo ending up with the Crown Royal brand.
