Institutional economists pointed out in a report that more important than the rate hike itself is the fact that the European Central Bank acknowledged at this meeting that economic performance is stronger than expected a few months ago and the inflation outlook is also more persistent.
The economist stated that the updated forecasts speak volumes about the situation.
He noted that despite rising energy prices and heightened geopolitical uncertainty, the eurozone economy has shown exceptionally robust resilience, prompting policymakers to raise their economic growth expectations.
Meanwhile, inflation forecasts have also been adjusted upward, reflecting persistently high energy costs and concerns that inflation may remain above target for a longer period.
This means the European Central Bank’s reaction function is skewed towards inflation; if economic resilience continues and energy prices do not decline, markets will continue to price in further tightening.
Going forward, attention will focus on eurozone growth and inflation data, energy price trends, and further statements from Lagarde, as these factors will determine whether the current rate hike cycle is truly nearing its end.
