U.S. government bond yields have surged to multi-year highs, oil prices continue to climb, and investors’ concerns over the Iran conflict are deepening.
There are reports that Trump’s advisers have privately hinted the conflict could extend to the end of his 2029 term, following an escalation in attacks from both sides.
Brent crude oil futures traded above $105 per barrel, the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield exceeded 4.9%, reaching its highest intraday level since October 2023.
The European Central Bank announced an interest rate hike on Thursday and indicated that inflation is expected to remain above target for an extended period, further strengthening expectations for high global interest rates.
Despite the U.S. Treasury Secretary intensifying long-term bond buybacks to curb government borrowing costs, Treasury yields continue rising. Meanwhile, Trump’s pledge to pay $5,000 to every American adult if Republicans retain Congressional control in November has cast further doubt on the outlook for federal spending.
The stock market fell, led by the Nasdaq index, as rising bond yields and high oil prices collectively dampened risk appetite.
