HYPE climbs to $82 as whale stakes $26 million, platform burns $2.65 million

HYPE, the native token of the Hyperliquid decentralized trading platform, saw its price rise to $82 after gaining 4% in the past 24 hours. This surge leaves HYPE’s year-to-date returns above 220%, pushing the token’s market capitalization to $18.2 billion and ranking it among the top ten cryptocurrencies by total value.

Whale activity and supply reduction boost HYPE

The recent upswing in HYPE’s price coincided with major accumulation by a prominent investor. Blockchain analytics platform Lookonchain reported that wallet address 0x6436 acquired 308,569 HYPE tokens—valued at approximately $26 million—and immediately staked the entire amount. This brought the wallet’s total holdings to 4.05 million HYPE, with a total value of around $322 million, all staked to the platform.

According to observers, this address has followed an aggressive pattern of buying and staking HYPE since early summer, with another large purchase totaling 3.24 million tokens just one week ago.

The wallet holding 0x6436 added 308,569 HYPE worth $26 million and now controls 4.05 million tokens—all staked, valued at $322 million.

On the supply side, Hyperliquid executed a significant buyback and burn event, removing 32,770 HYPE tokens—worth nearly $2.65 million at an average cost of $81.01 each—in a 24-hour period. According to OnchainLens, Hyperliquid has now completed a cumulative lifetime burn of 48.57 million HYPE, representing about $3.82 billion at present valuations. These events have removed 4.86% of the token’s maximum supply from circulation.

Mini dictionary: Hyperliquid is a decentralized derivatives trading platform that aims to offer fast, on-chain order execution and support for multiple crypto assets, focusing on transparency and user control in the perpetual trading market.

Market developments and technical outlook

Open interest on Hyperliquid grew from $7.9 billion to $8.1 billion in the last week, reflecting continued positioning by traders seeking further upside. However, Bitcoin trading volume on the platform fell sharply—from 3.08 million trades to just 656,000 trades in one week, a steep 79% drop. Analysts noted a bearish divergence on HYPE’s daily chart, suggesting that momentum could be waning and that a short-term correction is possible.

Despite this, technical analysts remain optimistic, pointing to a classic “bull flag” pattern following HYPE’s clean breakout above the $75 resistance. Many now identify $100 as the next likely price milestone, though a retracement toward $75 remains possible before further gains.

Regulatory concerns and future prospects

Regulatory developments are emerging as a potential headwind for Hyperliquid. Ran Neuner, founder of the media outlet Crypto Banter, stated in an interview with Cointelegraph’s Chain Reaction podcast that government scrutiny poses the main challenge for Hyperliquid, as authorities increasingly regulate both centralized and decentralized trading platforms.

Despite regulatory risks, Hyperliquid’s entrenched network effects provide a strong competitive edge, making its position difficult to replicate—much like Uber’s role in ride-sharing markets.

In August, President Trump signaled regulatory engagement, announcing that Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chair Michael Selig was working to ensure Hyperliquid could expand legally and compliantly within the United States. HYPE rallied nearly 20% following this statement, trading near $70 at the time.

As of now, HYPE trades at $82, yielding a fully diluted valuation of about $78.4 billion.
