(1) According to reports, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is expected to officially revoke greenhouse gas emission standards for fossil fuel power plants as early as September 14, canceling requirements introduced during the Biden administration that mandated the use of emission reduction technologies such as carbon capture and storage for both existing and new coal-fired and gas-fired power plants. (2) Reports also indicate that the EPA plans to introduce another rule revoking the determination under the Clean Air Act framework that greenhouse gas emissions from power plants pose a threat to public health. (3) In 2025, the EPA has already proposed a comprehensive plan to revoke greenhouse gas emission standards for the power sector. The U.S. power sector is the country’s largest industrial source of greenhouse gas emissions. (4) Regulations issued by the Biden administration in 2024 require existing coal-fired units to significantly reduce carbon emissions or potentially face closure.
