In a recent X post, legendary trader Peter Brandt breaks down the idea of market speculation, saying it is not simply about markets and prices, trading hours and margins, or charts and government reports.

Brandt implies that most traders, especially retail ones, may have been considering what might not really matter, adding that markets are all about redistributing wealth from the many to the few who might not be in every market every year.

The veteran trader added that the real game in the market is played in the 'upstairs private poker room,' which might refer to institutional traders and larger commercial participants. Smaller traders, on the other hand, have comparatively little influence: "You and I (5 to 20 or so futures contracts a trade) do not even count. We are peons. Ants viewed from space."

In this context, Brandt highlights the high failure rate among speculators (fewer than 3 in 1,000 make it) stemming from ignorance of this simple knowledge about market speculation.

According to Brandt, many retail traders blame losses on bad calls, government reports, or trading strategies rather than considering the structure of the market itself.

For crypto traders, Brandt's opinion, which he says is a personal one, might have important implications. Retail speculators can easily become focused on short-term price movements, technical signals, and the latest market narrative while overlooking what really matters.

"The sooner a retail speculator realizes that trading stocks and commodities is just a huge computer game, the better," Brandt stated.

The SEC provided interpretive guidance in March 2026 on crypto assets, classifying major cryptocurrencies with a 'digital commodity' label.

Traders look forward to macroeconomic events

Brandt's message to market participants comes as traders look forward to key macroeconomic events in the week.

The Federal Reserve's interest-rate decision is expected on Wednesday, accompanied by Chair Kevin Warsh's press conference and the updated Summary of Economic Projections, known as the "Dot Plot."

The Bank of England and Bank of Japan follow with their own rate decisions on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

The crypto market is showing mixed trading early Monday, with Bitcoin and some other crypto assets up on a daily basis. Despite this, Bitcoin remains below September 3, 2026's high of $82,283 as it consolidates following a short squeeze that lifted prices from $64,000 in August.
